The practice of art-making during mass uprisings has brought artistic practices closer to the people, solidifying their role as a necessary need tied to people’s lives and their envisioned utopian future. Consequently, people’s perception of art and artists improved significantly after being undermined for three decades by systematic Islamist propaganda under the ousted regime. On the other hand, this period also helped artists reshape their attitudes and ideas about the concept of creative production itself. By experimenting with new techniques, they had not previously explored and by considering the ethical dimensions of artistic production from a perspective of social responsibility, they evolved their practices. These interviews document the thoughts of Khartoum’s artists during a pivotal period in the transformation of the Sudanese art movement.
