Extended Cities is an interdisciplinary artistic residency project that explores the relationship between countries and cities, focusing on themes related to their history, literature, and memory, centring on the theme of construction and destruction. In the first chapter of the residency (2022-2024), Beirut and Khartoum were chosen as the central cities for the intersections. As for “Extended Cities: Khartoum – Cairo – Port Sudan,” presented in this booklet, it focuses on the intersections of Khartoum, Port Sudan, and Cairo. It explores, from a visual and artistic perspective, the reshaping of the narrative of the city of Khartoum in the cities of Port Sudan and Cairo following the displacement after the war in April 2023 and the subsequent social and economic transformations that affected the city’s space.

The accompanying book describes the project and its various stages, exploring the artists’ projects. The chapters include an introduction by curator Reem Aljeally, a theoretical framework for the “Extended Cities” project written by researcher Hassan Al-Nasser, and a chapter on ” (Re)searching Cities: On Displacement and Counter-Mapping ” written by urban researcher Sara Hagalhassan.
