A City No Longer Forgotten, A Conversation with Hassan Kamil

28th, Jun, 2025

In the project “An Unexpected Story from A City No Longer Forgotten,” Hassan Kamil documents his journey after being forced to flee his home in Khartoum due to the outbreak of war to his hometown of Berber. Through a personal window into the wider crisis, Hassan documents his own experience and the life of his new family in Berber over the course of 13 months of displacement.

Hassan Al-Nasser speaks with Hassan Kamil about the relationship between photography and the city, and how Kamil perceives it through his experience and the projects he has produced. Khartoum has not been erased from memory, but despite its near-oblivion, it can be reclaimed in an instant.
