Freedom of Walls
A solo exhibition by Hazim Alhussain
November 19 – December 01 (2022)
Exhibition
Since the early existence of humanity, walls have been used as a medium for documentation, narration, and preservation of history, cultures, and humanity as a whole. The Sudanese revolution was no exception to this form of powerful means of public preservation as the chants, callings, and images were presented on the walls of the city gazing upon its citizens. A call to freedom on one wall not only preserves this demand presented by its maker, but it manifests itself in forms that affect those who gaze upon it while, at the same time, absorbing the eloquence of this audience.
Freedom of Walls is a commentary on visual imitations of reality; it is an expression of the artist’s interest in the power of media and mediums on people. It is a study of creating and breaking out patterns in social contexts. “Revolution and art are the same, they are both a form of breaking out of patterns” – Hazim Alhussain. In this exhibition, he opposes the dangers of turning what is meant to be revolutionary and unique into a daily aspect that we get used to, as well as discussing what globalisation has enforced upon cultures and humans.
In his imitations of the public street, Hazim observes and studies the effects of the medium carrying knowledge on its recipient. Through exposing his artworks to public sight, he believes they carry power similar to the one within these walls that are marked with writings.
“This idea of notation on walls was in no way a means for mortality. It is merely an expression of the moment, happening on the spot.” – Hazim. This notion is manifested in the artist’s artworks through his creative process and techniques. The act of spontaneity, accompanied by previous planning, results from the artist’s methods of bringing his views of social and political matters to the surface.
